The perfect Bridesmaid is a Brides greatest asset, it’s a fact! You’re there through every step of planning, because this is the real world and the majority of Grooms are either smart enough to step back a bit while you plan or aren’t that ‘in to detail’. The bridesmaid roll isn’t over there however, you also get charged with collaborating with other bridal party members on Bachelorette party ideas, shoes, dresses, makeup, hair, and of course ensuring the process is as easy as possible for your bride so that she can have a perfect, stress free, love filled wedding day. bridesmaid 4

A Bridesmaid like that though, is a rare commodity! If you find one ladies then please let us all know! Share her around!

bridesmaid 5 Out of the hundreds of weddings I’ve worked with there has probably been about 8 or 9 truly great bridesmaids. Many good ones but the great are few.

It’s no secret that I (the photographer) often end up carying the brides dress, fixing her hair or lipstick, ensuring she eats something to fend of feinting in that oh so tight Vera Wang, or even swapping shoes with her because those Jimmy Choo’s might look amazing but definitely needed another 8 hours wearing in!

You may think that as a bridesmaid your job is to just show up get pampered, wear a pretty dress and look good for a friends photos, its not.

Here’s the slap in the face that I know every bride wants to give you as a bridesmaid, when she rolls her eyes my direction because I’m helping her climb a set of stairs while her bridesmaids giggle and chat at the bottom being utterly useless and neglecting their job.

When your bride asked you to be a bridesmaid, she wasn’t just saying “your a bestie and you’ll look cute as in my photos”, she was asking for your help and finding out if you were willing to put in the miles, time and effort to make this an incredible, memorable time in her life. Its an honour that she wants to remember your hard labours for her. So be ready and be energetic because go time, starts the minute you find out who your other bridal team mates are.

Just a few tips

For the planning journey;

  • Create a Facebook group for bridesmaids to collaborate and keep each other up to date on everything your bride wants and needs.
  • Check in with your bride AT LEAST once every 1-2 weeks. Be consistent in asking if you can help or if she needs a friend with her to go meet the florist, hairdresser or celebrant.
  • Consider your brides wants when planning the bachelorette party. Its not about what’s easiest for you, the most fun or tradition. Its about her and what she would love. 🙂

On the day;

  • Have an emergency kit! Contents: Touch up makeup, bobby pins, flat shoes, safety pins, needle and tread (you never know), hollywood tape, aspirin, allergy cream.
  • Take Jelly Lollies of some kind to keep the blood sugar level up for the whole bridal party.
  • Ensure your bride is always adequately fed and watered.
  • Let her relax so much more knowing you and your other team members are there to carry her dress, flowers, gifts, glasses… anything really. Her hands should be free for her new husband to hold 🙂

At the reception;

  • Like it or not when all that family comes together theres always a chance of arguments so chat to them all, keep it light and relaxed.
  • If the dance floor is slow but you know your bride would love it full then drag up a few people and get that party going.
  • Stay until after the couple leaves, show your support until the very last 🙂
  • Ensure your couple have all they need before departing.

If you can manage even half of these you’ll be a good bridesmaid, manage them all and you would be a complete legend in my book and women should hire you to rock it as a bridesmaid at their wedding 🙂

Much love to all and best of luck!
